Cognitive Dissonance keeps the mind trapped in states of confusion, denial and defense. This makes people an easy target for manipulation. When people are already confused and then bombarded with messages of fear and danger, the brain tends to shut down into dissociation. People can end up consenting to, or even doing, horrific things without realizing how they got there.
